NGTP Named Best New Innovative Practice in ITS

NEW YORK (ITS World Congress), November 17, 2008 – Today the Intelligent Transportation Society of America (ITS America) named BMW the winner of its Best New Innovative Practices award for the Next Generation Telematics Protocol (NGTP) initiative. The award, which comes only 10 months after the public launch of NGTP at the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show, was presented at the 2008 Best of ITS Awards ceremony during the ITS America Annual Meeting and Exposition, held in conjunction with the ITS World Congress in New York.

NGTP is one of the initiatives BMW has undertaken with Connexis to help define future telematics services. The objective of NGTP is to create flexibility and scalability in the delivery of telematics, for the benefit of vehicle manufacturers and their customers, manufacturers of telematics communications units (TCUs), telematics service providers (TSPs), and content providers. NGTP is device-independent and can increase the quality and range of services at a competitive value proposition. BMW will implement the NGTP framework in 2010.

“We are pleased that the industry recognizes the benefits NGTP can have on the delivery of innovative ITS applications,” noted Kenji Ikeura, President of Connexis. “The open approach of NGTP will not only bring greater flexibility and scalability to telematics, but also expedite the ability of devices to communicate with each other for a wide variety of telematics and ITS applications that improve the driving experience.”

The NGTP website regularly receives inquiries from a range of industry players seeking to understand the framework and its benefits. To learn more about NGTP and download its openly available specifications, please visit www.ngtp.org.
